Five Things to Prepare Before Redesigning a Website

Explain why you want to redesign

An outdated appearance, poor mobile usability and a difficult enquiry process require different solutions. List the three most important improvements, identify your customers and explain what they should be able to do on the site.

Organise content worth keeping

Collect company, service, product, project, image and brand assets, marking anything that needs updating. Valuable content from the old site can be retained within the new structure.

List essential functions and references

Separate must-have functions from future ideas. When sharing reference websites, explain whether you like the layout, navigation or interactions rather than providing URLs alone.

Confirm access to domains, the CMS and hosting

Identify who manages the domain, hosting, CMS and analytics. Plan redirects and migration if URLs change, and check whether any settings are shared with company email.

Agree budget, timing and responsibilities

Set a budget range, target launch date and internal contacts for design approvals and content. Clear responsibilities for copy, imagery, translation, testing and maintenance support a realistic schedule.
